Black Lives Matter Resources

As a local therapist here in the Sacramento area, I have talked with several people over the last couple of weeks who are frustrated with racial injustice in the US and the murder of George Floyd. I have heard many voice frustration about not knowing what to do or how to help. In response to this, I decided to compile a list of Black Lives Matter and racial justice resources. To serve our community, I’m trying to focus this list on resources local to Sacramento and surrounding areas, but you will also find several national resources in here too.

Creating this list is an ongoing project. If you have anything you think should be added, please send it to us at info@sacwellness.com

General Resources

Safe Black Space

safe black space banner

Safe Black Space Community Healing Circles started in April 2018 in response to increased racial tensions and trauma after the killing of Stephon Clark, an unarmed 22 year old Black man, by the Sacramento Police. Meant to provide a chance for Black people to deal with the rage, shock, fear, and sadness that so many of us were (and are) feeling.

Safe Black Space has mobilized a growing collective of local practitioners, community members and activists, faith leaders, educators and others of African ancestry. This village has been offering Safe Black Space Community Healing Circles on a monthly basis across Sacramento, as well as advocating locally and demanding justice in instances of racism and oppression.

Safe Black Space is for people who self-identify as being of African ancestry and who are experiencing racial stress, anxiety, and/or trauma. Currently, its gatherings and resources are designed for adults and youth who are at least 14 years old.

Black Lives Matter Sacramento

black lives matter sacramento logo

Since November of 2015, the mission of Black Lives Matter Sacramento has been to empower our local communities that have often been on the receiving end of injustice, inequality and disenfranchisement. Through education and action, it is our goal to intervene where Black lives are systematically and intentionally targeted for demise.  We are committed to boldly challenging state-sanctioned violence within our city and against our community members.  This fight includes but is not limited to standing against the displacement of people of color; the oppressive nature of politics, politicians and business, as usual, that values profit over basic human rights; and behaviors and excessive force associated with law enforcement that lead to mass incarceration, police brutality and death.  At the end of the day, this work is about uniting communities and working with organizations while seeking equality and equity.

Sacramento ACT organizes to create a more just and fair community for everyone in the Sacramento region, with a particular focus on communities of color that have experienced historical discrimination and disinvestment. Our organizing is grounded in the conviction that equity—just and fair inclusion in society—must drive public policy.

Media

One way to take action is to share things that speak to people and spur them to action and/or make them think. This is where we will be putting anything that really moves us and feels like it should be shared.

Seeing White – A podcast series

seeing white

Just what is going on with white people? Police shootings of unarmed African Americans. Acts of domestic terrorism by white supremacists. The renewed embrace of raw, undisguised white-identity politics. Unending racial inequity in schools, housing, criminal justice, and hiring. Some of this feels new, but in truth it’s an old story.

Why? Where did the notion of “whiteness” come from? What does it mean? What is whiteness for?

Scene on Radio host and producer John Biewen took a deep dive into these questions, along with an array of leading scholars and regular guest Dr. Chenjerai Kumanyika, in this fourteen-part documentary series, released between February and August 2017. The series editor is Loretta Williams.
