A common problem that comes up in counseling is self esteem. Many people are really hard on themselves and truly believe they are ugly, dumb, etc. This video was created by Dove in 2013. It was a good illustration of the ways reality rarely matches up to our own harsh self criticisms. It’s very common for people to dislike aspects of their appearance. In extreme cases this is referred to as body dysmorphic disorder.
If you suffer from self esteem problems, it may be time to consider counseling. Give me a call sometime and we can talk about what is going on and how I might be able to help.
Update: There was some controversy surrounding this video. Many people think that it perpetuates stereotypes of beauty and…you know, it could very well be rigged. I mean, the artist isn’t seeing the people he’s drawing, but he probably knew the intention of the project and thereby would lean towards making the first image less appealing. Either way though, I still think it is a good illustration of the way we tend to look down on ourselves. We truly are our worst critics.
